The industrial sector consumes 30% of the produced energy

It’s 19 million tons o.e. (crude oil equivalent) and the large part of this energy – 63% – is consumed by the iron-and-steel industry. The 2nd largest consumers are households – 17,6 million tons o.e (27,5%), the third one is the transportation sector – 9,2 million tons o.e. (14%).

Ukrainian gas reserves are sufficient only for 40 years

These are commercial reserves and their layer of development is 87%. At the same time, the level of knowledge on potential reserves – the correlation between commercial reserves and estimated ones, – is only 16%.

While uranium reserves will last for 259 years

Ukraine is ranked 12th according to the level of the uranium reserves. 53% of these reserves are economically viable – the net cost of extraction is 130 USD/kg of uranium. Though, by 2040 the operational lifetime of 12 out of 15 nuclear reactors will come to an end, while nuclear power stations are responsible for 55% of the general volume of generated energy. The construction of one reactor similar to those currently in use will cost around USD 5 billion and can take from 6 to 10 years. Thus, the creation of similar reactors isn’t economically viable which means that for the preservation of the nuclear energy role new technologies should be introduced.

Only 1% of the energy produced in Ukraine is generated from renewable sources

According to the Energy strategy, the production of energy from renewable sources should increase by 13 times from 2017 to 2035 – up to 13%. It’s completely achievable: the total power output of wind power stations (WPS) which remain under construction as of the end of 2017 is 6 times higher than the volume of already installed WPS. At the same time, the volume of solar panels installed on the roofs of houses increases by 20-30% quarterly. Moreover, the price of solar power station construction decreased twice during 2015-2017.
